Data Transfer with Globus

All RCC storage systems are configured as Globus endpoints to facilitate the transfer of data. Globus can be used in a number of different ways:

  • Transfer large amounts of data between RCC storage systems (e.g. Archival to HPC/GPFS)
  • Transfer large amounts of data from an RCC storage system to a personal computer with Globus Connect Personal
  • Transfer large amounts of data between RCC storage systems and storage systems at other institutions
  • Publish and curate data sets with Globus Data Publication
  • Set up automated transfers with the Globus CLI utility or your own application with the Globus APIs. As an alternative to SFTP, Globus is a more fully-featured and reliable tool for transferring large datasets.

Setting up a Globus Account and Endpoint

Before you can transfer data to or from an RCC storage system, you must sign up for a Globus account. A Globus Connect Personal endpoint is necessary to transfer data to and from your personal computer.

  1. Visit and sign up for an account by selecting the Log-In button from the upper right corner of the screen.
    1. Select Florida State University from the dropdown menu and sign-in with your FSUID.
    2. Follow the prompts to finish setting up your account.
  2. Get Globus Connect Personal here: Globus Connect Personal is available for Mac, Windows, and Linux operating systems. The webpage should automatically display the version of the software compatible with your machine's operating system, but you can select Show me other supported operating systems to access the download buttons for all three operating systems.
  3. Download Globus Connect Personal to your computer. Open the installation file and follow the prompts to finish installing the software.
  4. Open Globus Connect Personal on your computer and select Log-In.
      1. Navigate to the new browser window opened by the application and allow permissions.
      2. Return to the Globus Connect Personal application on your computer
  5. Create a collection name and description for your endpoint.
    1. Leave the High Assurance checkbox blank.
    2. Select Save.

Transferring Data

Once you have set up an account and endpoint, you can transfer data anytime.

  1. Start the Globus Client running on your computer.
    1. Globus Client Looks like this on Start-Up:
    2. Click "Connect" and the Globus Online indicator should turn green:
  2. Log in to and browse to the File Manager tab on the left menu bar.
  3. Select Search (next to the magnifying glass icon) inside the Collection bar and enter the name of an endpoint. You can also select the Your Collections tab below the collection bar to view the list of your endpoints.
  4. In the Path bar, type the path in your file tree that you wish to transfer files to or from. You can also select a path from the list of your files below the Path bar.
    1. You may need to allow permissions for Globus Connect Personal to access files on your computer.
    2. You may also need to authenticate to access the collection you are looking for.
    3. Example for fsurcc#gpfs_research
    4. After authentication a long list of research directories should be available.  Be sure to select yours or type the name of your research partition into the Path bar after "/gpfs/research/" ... the same is true for the Archival collections.  For the GPFS Home collection, if you authenticate, it should take you directly to your home directory.
  5. Select "Transfer or Sync to" on the Right side of the screen:
  6. Select "Split Pane" on the top right of the screen
  7. Click "Search" on the right side pane.  This will allow you to select your local collection/endpoint that you created before.  Be sure to select the "Your Collections" and choose the personal endpoint/collection you created before.  It's icon to the left of the name should be green if you have the Globus Connect app running:
  8. Select the file or folder you wish to transfer.  For example:
  9. Select Start to initiate the transfer.  You will get an indicator saying that the transfer request was submitted.
  10. Your files will now be queued for transfer. You can monitor the progress of your transfer by browsing to the Activity tab on the left menu bar.
